Common Pottery Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU common pottery market increased by 4.3% to $X, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, common pottery production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU

In 2022, overseas shipments of common pottery decreased by -4.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, common pottery exports contracted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +71.8% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Portugal (X tons) represented the major exporter of common pottery, committing 36% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Romania (X tons), Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 50% share of total exports. France (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to common pottery exports from Portugal stood at +7.3%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+17.4%), Poland (+9.1%) and Spain (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012-2022. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.4%), France (-3.6%) and Romania (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+12 p.p.), Portugal (+9.9 p.p.), Spain (+2 p.p.) and Poland (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy, France, Germany and Romania saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -3.5%, -6.5% and -9.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest common pottery supplying countries in the European Union were Portugal ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 51% share of total exports. Poland, France, Italy, Spain and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, common pottery imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +65.0% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of common pottery, namely Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Poland, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Romania (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Finland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 8.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
