In 2021, the EU cotton yarn market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decline. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cotton yarn exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 51% of total exports in 2021. Germany (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Portugal (11%) and Belgium (6%). The following exporters - Poland (X tons), Greece (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 16% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest cotton yarn supplier in the European Union, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy totaled -1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-4.2% per year) and Spain (-0.3% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
