The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 22%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, couscous exports stood at $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) was the largest exporter of couscous, comprising 58% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), constituting a 30% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, purchases abroad of couscous decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, couscous imports amounted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +44.8% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
France represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 40% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (11%), Spain (10%) and Italy (5.6%). The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into France increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Portugal (+37.9%), Poland (+20.9%), Denmark (+19.6%), Germany (+13.1%), Spain (+7.9%), Italy (+7.9%), the Czech Republic (+7.9%), the Netherlands (+7.9%), Sweden (+5.8%), Belgium (+5.4%) and Austria (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Portugal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2012-2021. Germany (+4.3 p.p.), Poland (+2.2 p.p.) and Portugal (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belgium and France saw its share reduced by -1.5% and -10.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported couscous in the European Union, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in France stood at +4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+6.3% per year) and Germany (+11.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
