Cotton-Seed Oil Market Size in the EU

The EU cotton-seed oil market dropped to $X in 2021, waning by -9.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild slump. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cotton-seed oil production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in the EU

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of crude cotton-seed oil, when their volume increased by 57% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 59%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton-seed oil exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Greece (X tons) represented the key exporter of crude cotton-seed oil, committing 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), making up a 22% share of total exports. Belgium (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Greece was also the fastest-growing in terms of the crude cotton-seed oil exports, with a CAGR of +81.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, France (+20.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belgium (-16.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Greece (+75 p.p.) and France (+20 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest cotton-seed oil supplying countries in the European Union were Greece ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 96% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Greece, with a CAGR of +80.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cotton-seed oil export price increased by +16.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, supplies from abroad of crude cotton-seed oil was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +35.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported crude cotton-seed oil in the European Union, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Ireland, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium stood at +4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+29.8% per year) and Ireland (+5.8% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 99%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
