In 2022, the EU diesel-electric and other locomotive market increased by 613% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw significant growth. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Production of Diesel-Electric and Other Locomotives in the EU

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of diesel-electric and other locomotives increased by 23% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 117%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units) represented the major exporter of diesel-electric and other locomotives, comprising 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Croatia (X units) and Italy (X units), together achieving a 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Austria (X units), France (X units), Poland (X units), Spain (X units), Romania (X units), Ireland (X units), Belgium (X units) and Estonia (X units) - together made up 24% of total exports.

Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -6.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+46.2%), Croatia (+25.2%), Ireland (+17.5%), Estonia (+11.6%), France (+8.4%), Spain (+4.1%) and the Czech Republic (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +46.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Romania (-2.7%), Belgium (-5.0%), Italy (-5.7%), Austria (-5.7%) and Poland (-9.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+7.6 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+6.7 p.p.), Croatia (+4.4 p.p.), France (+2.6 p.p.), Ireland (+2.2 p.p.) and Spain (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Poland and Germany saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -11.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) emerged as the largest diesel-electric and other locomotive supplier in the European Union, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany amounted to -6.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (-1.7% per year) and the Czech Republic (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -46.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while Austria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+35.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, supplies from abroad of diesel-electric and other locomotives increased by 23% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 222% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, diesel-electric and other locomotive imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 177%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Slovakia represented the key importer of diesel-electric and other locomotives in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 52% of total imports in 2022. Spain (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Bulgaria (X units) and Poland (X units). All these countries together took near 31% share of total imports. Italy (X units), Belgium (X units) and Austria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Slovakia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the diesel-electric and other locomotives imports, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bulgaria (+56.1%), Spain (+50.9%), Belgium (+25.0%), Italy (+3.7%) and Austria (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Slovakia (+51 p.p.), Spain (+18 p.p.), Bulgaria (+6.5 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Poland saw its share reduced by -4.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported diesel-electric and other locomotives in the European Union, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 3.1% share.

In Slovakia, diesel-electric and other locomotive imports expanded at an average annual rate of +82.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Spain (+48.4% per year) and Italy (+21.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, surging by 69% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 210% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while Bulgaria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
