In 2022, overseas shipments of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) increased by 0.6% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft), namely Italy, Germany and France, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Sweden (X units), Spain (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Finland (X units) and Belgium (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +10.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 75% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +5.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, supplies from abroad of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) increased by 7.9% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +51.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, imports of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, France (X units), Italy (X units) and Germany (X units) represented the key importer of diesel engines (other than for motor vehicles and aircraft) in the European Union, committing 52% of total import. Spain (X units) held an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (7.5%), the Czech Republic (7.1%), Belgium (5%) and Ireland (4.7%).

The Netherlands, Spain, the Czech Republic, Ireland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +6.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 5.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
