The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Germany (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) represented roughly 88% of total imports in 2021.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Portugal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 52% of total imports. Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.
Among the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 2.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
