Market Size for Duck and Goose Meat in the EU

In 2022, the EU duck and goose meat market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Production of Duck and Goose Meat in the EU

In value terms, duck and goose meat production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of duck and goose meat production was France (X tons), comprising approx. 40% of total volume. Moreover, duck and goose meat production in France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hungary (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 16% share.

In France, duck and goose meat production shrank by an average annual rate of -4.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hungary (-0.1% per year) and Poland (+4.7% per year).

The average duck and goose meat yield expanded slightly to X kg per head in 2022, with an increase of 1.6% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 2.7%. Over the period under review, the duck and goose meat yield reached the peak level at X kg per head in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for duck and goose meat production in the European Union; growing by 4.4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, the number of producing animals attained the peak level of X heads. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of this number failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of duck and goose meat were exported in the European Union; with a decrease of -8.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) represented roughly 55% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons), together constituting a 34% share of total exports. From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest duck and goose meat supplying countries in the European Union were Poland ($X), Hungary ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 68% of total exports.

Poland, with a CAGR of +8.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Duck and goose meat imports fell to X tons in 2022, reducing by -9.9% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, duck and goose meat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Germany represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 35% of total imports. France (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belgium (8.5%), the Czech Republic (6.7%) and Spain (6.2%). The Netherlands (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Austria (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Slovakia (+7.5%), the Netherlands (+5.4%), Italy (+5.1%), Romania (+5.0%), Spain (+2.9%) and Belgium (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovakia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +7.5% from 2012-2022. Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.5%), Austria (-3.0%), the Czech Republic (-3.8%) and Denmark (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Slovakia (+1.8 p.p.), Spain (+1.7 p.p.), Belgium (+1.7 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -1.7%, -2.9% and -3.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest duck and goose meat importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Spain, the Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Italy, Romania and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +14.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
