Envelope Market Size in the EU
In 2021, the EU envelope market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in the EU
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of envelopes increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, envelope exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons) represented the major exporter of envelopes, creating 33% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 17% share, followed by Slovakia (7%), the Netherlands (5.8%), Hungary (5.8%), Spain (5.6%) and France (5.4%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest envelope supplying countries in the European Union were Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 54% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +8.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovakia (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Envelope Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of envelopes, when their volume increased by 0.6% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 8% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, envelope imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a slight slump. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Austria (X tons) represented the main importers of envelopes, together committing 76% of total imports. Italy (X tons), Finland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to envelope imports into Germany stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Finland (+13.1%), Sweden (+7.5%), Italy (+6.4%), Spain (+6.2%), Poland (+4.1%) and the Czech Republic (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hungary (-2.6%), Austria (-5.3%), Belgium (-6.1%), France (-7.0%) and the Netherlands (-7.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+11 p.p.), Sweden (+6.8 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+2.5 p.p.), Finland (+2.3 p.p.) and Italy (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Austria, Belgium, France and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -2.9%, -5.8% and -7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest envelope importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Spain, Poland, Finland and Hungary, which together accounted for a further 45%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +9.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
