The EU internal combustion engine equipment market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.0% against 2020 indices. Exports in the EU
In 2022, approx. X units of equipment for internal combustion engines were exported in the European Union; dropping by -16.5% against 2021 figures. In general, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy (X units) and Germany (X units) represented roughly 56% of total exports in 2022. Slovenia (X units) took an 8.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (8.3%), France (7.6%) and Spain (5.2%). Hungary (X units) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +22.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest internal combustion engine equipment supplier in the European Union, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovenia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany totaled -3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Slovenia (+8.5% per year) and France (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, rising by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 10%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of equipment for internal combustion engines, when their volume decreased by -27.4% to X units. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, internal combustion engine equipment imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany was the main importing country with an import of around X units, which finished at 35% of total imports. Poland (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by France (X units), Italy (X units), Spain (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Belgium (X units). All these countries together took approx. 51% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to internal combustion engine equipment imports into Germany stood at -4.2%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +3.4% from 2012-2022. Belgium and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-1.5%), Italy (-3.7%) and France (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Belgium increased by +3.3, +2.8, +2.1 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported equipment for internal combustion engines in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 9.2% share.
In Germany, internal combustion engine equipment imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-0.9% per year) and France (-11.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 21% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Germany ($X per unit) and Poland ($X per unit), while the Netherlands ($X per unit) and Spain ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
