For the third year in a row, the EU ethanal market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 5.8% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, ethanal imports in the European Union shrank to X tons, reducing by -6.7% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, ethanal imports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, France (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) represented the main importer of ethanal (acetaldehyde) in the European Union, creating 94% of total import. Austria (X tons) and Italy (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
