Ether Market Size in the EU
The EU ether market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the market value increased by 9%. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Ether Production in the EU
In value terms, ether production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, the amount of ethers exported in the European Union shrank to X tons, which is down by -13.9% compared with the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ether exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 45% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Germany (17%) and Belgium (11%). The following exporters - Spain (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.3% share of total exports.
The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of ethers. At the same time, Italy (+16.5%) and Finland (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +16.5% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-1.9%), Spain (-3.0%) and Belgium (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -4.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total exports. Belgium, Italy, Spain and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Ether Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2022, approx. X tons of ethers were imported in the European Union; declining by -5.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports recorded a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ether imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 29% of total imports. Italy (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), France (X tons), Germany (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took near 59% share of total imports.
The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of ethers. At the same time, Greece (+24.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +24.3% from 2012-2022. France, Germany and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-4.0%) and Spain (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Greece (+6 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.3 p.p.), France (+2.2 p.p.), Belgium (+2 p.p.) and Germany (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-4.4 p.p.) and Spain (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest ether importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. France, Belgium, Spain and Greece lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Greece, with a CAGR of +20.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 17% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
