The Netherlands represented the key exporter of expansible polystyrene in primary forms in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 36% of total exports in 2021. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by France (12%), Greece (7.5%), the Czech Republic (7.2%), Poland (7%) and Hungary (4.7%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to expansible polystyrene exports from the Netherlands stood at +5.4%. At the same time, Poland (+8.0%), Belgium (+7.6%) and Greece (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +8.0% from 2012-2021. Hungary experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In the Netherlands, expansible polystyrene exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+8.5% per year) and France (-3.0% per year).

For the fifth consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of expansible polystyrene in primary forms, which increased by 13% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, expansible polystyrene imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Romania (X tons) represented the main importers of expansible polystyrene in primary forms, together generating 61% of total imports. Sweden (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 46% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Romania, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 42%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +9.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 71% against the previous year. Import price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
