As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, fiberboard exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X cubic meters), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X cubic meters), Poland (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters), France (X cubic meters), Spain (X cubic meters) and Romania (X cubic meters) were the main exporters of fiber board of wood or other ligneous materials, together creating 77% of total exports. Austria (X cubic meters), Ireland (X cubic meters), Portugal (X cubic meters), Hungary (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters) and Luxembourg (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fiberboard exports from Germany stood at -1.1%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+17.2%), Luxembourg (+5.6%), Hungary (+3.4%), Spain (+2.4%), Romania (+2.0%) and Ireland (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. France, Poland and Portugal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.5%), Austria (-4.5%) and Italy (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+8.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Italy (-2.4 p.p.), Austria (-2.5 p.p.), Belgium (-3.3 p.p.) and Germany (-4.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest fiberboard supplier in the European Union, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 11% share.

In Germany, fiberboard exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (+4.6% per year) and Belgium (+2.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, fiberboard imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per cubic meter), while the Netherlands ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
