The EU fish parts market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fish parts production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -27.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 43%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, fish parts exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a moderate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 85%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Portugal was the major exporter of fish heads, tails and maws in the European Union, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 38% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Denmark (13%), Lithuania (11%), the Netherlands (5.7%) and Spain (5.4%). Germany (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish parts exports from Portugal stood at +28.1%. At the same time, Denmark (+29.4%), Lithuania (+15.4%), Spain (+11.9%) and Poland (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +29.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.3%) and Germany (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Portugal (+28 p.p.), Denmark (+9.8 p.p.) and Lithuania (+2.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Poland (-1.9 p.p.), the Netherlands (-14.4 p.p.) and Germany (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Portugal ($X) and Denmark ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 62% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +29.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -16.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, purchases abroad of fish heads, tails and maws decreased by -31.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fish parts imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Portugal (X tons) was the key importer of fish heads, tails and maws, achieving 43% of total imports. Denmark (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Latvia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 40% share of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to fish parts imports into Portugal stood at +9.8%. At the same time, Denmark (+55.1%) and Spain (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-7.8%), Latvia (-11.1%), Austria (-11.2%) and the Netherlands (-15.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Portugal (+31 p.p.), Denmark (+17 p.p.) and Spain (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Austria, Belgium, Latvia and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -4.1%, -5.8%, -6.6% and -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest fish parts importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), Portugal ($X) and Denmark ($X), together accounting for 60% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +59.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
