From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fish meals and pellet exports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 27%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Latvia (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the key exporters of flours, meals and pellets of fish in 2021, resulting at near 32% and 26% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Poland (X tons), together comprising a 27% share of total exports. Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +26.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest fish meals and pellet supplier in the European Union, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.9% share.

In Denmark, fish meals and pellet exports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-1.1% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.8% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -13.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish decreased by -10.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fish meals and pellet imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

The purchases of the three major importers of flours, meals and pellets of fish, namely Sweden, Denmark and Germany, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), mixing up an 8.5% share of total imports. The following importers - Greece (X tons), Italy (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -10.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the import price increased by 53%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
