Exports in the EU
In 2021, overseas shipments of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs increased by 0.4% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 7.8% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Denmark represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 44% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Spain (13%). France (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Ireland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons), Estonia (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs. At the same time, the Netherlands (+18.8%), Estonia (+18.1%), Portugal (+12.8%), Latvia (+11.7%), Spain (+5.9%), Ireland (+5.5%), Poland (+2.4%) and France (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Germany (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Denmark, Spain, Latvia, the Netherlands and Ireland increased by +9, +6.5, +2.6, +2.4 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest seafood meals and pellets supplier in the European Union, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.
In Denmark, seafood meals and pellets exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-10.3% per year) and Spain (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 18%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs decreased by -2.2% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Greece (X tons), Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Italy (X tons) represented roughly 73% of total imports in 2021. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.7% share, followed by Poland (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +9.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest seafood meals and pellets importing markets in the European Union were Greece ($X), Germany ($X) and Denmark ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. Spain, Italy, France and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
