The EU market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Production of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine in the EU
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine production skyrocketed to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
Exports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Exports in the EU
Fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 6.5% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total exports in 2021. Poland (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 9% share, followed by Romania (8.4%) and Germany (4.6%). The following exporters - Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine supplier in the European Union, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 2.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Belgium was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-2.0% per year) and Germany (-9.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 9.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine export price increased by +44.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine
Imports in the EU
After two years of decline, purchases abroad of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines increased by 1.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the largest importers of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines in the European Union, together finishing at near 57% of total imports. Hungary (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by France (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines in the European Union, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Belgium stood at -5.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-2.4% per year) and France (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 47%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
