Fonio Market Size in the EU

The EU fonio market reduced to $X in 2022, dropping by -7.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of fonio decreased by -46.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 97%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fonio imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

France represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 49% of total imports. The Netherlands (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together held near 46% share of total imports. Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

France was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fonio imports, with a CAGR of +15.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
