In 2022, Poland (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Germany (X tons) was the key exporter of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal in the European Union, comprising 71% of total export. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons), together making up a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh beef carcase imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the largest importers of fresh or chilled carcases of beef and veal in the European Union, together resulting at approx. 48% of total imports. Germany (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (9.3%), Greece (7.8%), Portugal (6.5%) and Spain (4.6%). Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
