In value terms, fresh pork carcase production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), with a combined 70% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat decreased by -5.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 5.1% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fresh pork carcase exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Belgium (X tons) was the largest exporter of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat, creating 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), together mixing up a 42% share of total exports. The following exporters - Poland (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - each reached a 7.8% share of total exports.
Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat. At the same time, Hungary (+9.4%) and Denmark (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +9.4% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.7%), the Netherlands (-5.1%) and Poland (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+6.9 p.p.), Hungary (+2.4 p.p.) and Denmark (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany, Poland and the Netherlands saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -2.8% and -4.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest fresh pork carcase supplier in the European Union, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Belgium was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-3.6% per year) and the Netherlands (-4.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, approx. X tons of fresh or chilled carcases of pig meat were imported in the European Union; reducing by -6.5% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 6.2%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fresh pork carcase imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 33% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together committing a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - Slovakia (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - together made up 14% of total imports.
Imports into Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -1.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Netherlands (+13.6%), Slovakia (+9.7%), Romania (+9.2%), Spain (+5.3%) and Poland (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. The Czech Republic experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.0%), Lithuania (-2.5%), Greece (-4.0%) and Austria (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+4.5 p.p.), Romania (+3.1 p.p.), Slovakia (+2.5 p.p.) and Poland (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Austria, Greece and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.8% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 60% of total imports. Greece, Romania, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Lithuania and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.
Among the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +9.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
