Ginger Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU ginger market decreased by -10.7% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a prominent expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Ginger Production in the EU

In value terms, ginger production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 1,417,914,950%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Lithuania (X tons) remains the largest ginger producing country in the European Union, accounting for 85% of total volume. Moreover, ginger production in Lithuania exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Slovenia (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Lithuania amounted to -1.0%.

Ginger Exports

Exports in the EU

In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of ginger, when their volume decreased by -24.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 42%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, ginger exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - each reached a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ginger exports from the Netherlands stood at +8.1%. At the same time, Spain (+23.4%), Germany (+14.6%), Poland (+14.0%) and Italy (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Spain (+4.8 p.p.) and Germany (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest ginger supplier in the European Union, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Netherlands totaled +10.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+13.8% per year) and Spain (+26.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -17% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, supplies from abroad of ginger decreased by -9.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands represented the main importer of ginger in the European Union, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 44% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Spain (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total imports. Italy (X tons), Poland (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 69% of total imports. Spain, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Among the main importing countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -20.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
