The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, glass in the mass exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Belgium represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 31% of total exports. France (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (8%), Ireland (7.6%), Germany (7.6%) and Romania (4.8%). Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Austria (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Belgium increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+55.1%), Romania (+33.1%), Denmark (+32.1%), Lithuania (+13.0%), Hungary (+9.5%), Ireland (+4.7%), France (+3.7%), Slovenia (+2.7%) and Sweden (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Austria (-4.1%), Germany (-4.8%) and the Netherlands (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Belgium, Romania, Poland, Denmark, Hungary and Ireland increased by +9.4, +4.5, +3.9, +3.3, +2.1 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X) remains the largest glass in the mass supplier in the European Union, comprising 33% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.
In Belgium, glass in the mass exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-0.8% per year) and France (-0.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of glass in the mass, when their volume decreased by -3.1% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, glass in mass imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
In value terms, glass in the mass imports declined to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, glass in mass imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the major importers of glass in the mass in the European Union, together generating 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Austria (X tons), together making up a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Croatia (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +23.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest glass in the mass importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), Portugal ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Bulgaria, Austria, Denmark and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Croatia, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 16%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
