The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, glass closure exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a notable increase. Exports by Country
Austria represented the key exporter of glass stoppers, lids and other closures in the European Union, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 36% of total exports in 2022. France (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons). All these countries together took near 54% share of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) emerged as the largest glass closure supplier in the European Union, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Czech Republic amounted to +14.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Austria (+8.1% per year) and France (-2.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, glass closure export price increased by +3.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU
After five years of growth, supplies from abroad of glass stoppers, lids and other closures decreased by -14.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 63%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, glass closure imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 35%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons) was the major importer of glass stoppers, lids and other closures, constituting 44% of total imports. Spain (X tons) held a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (9.4%), Romania (8.9%), France (8.4%) and Germany (6.2%). The Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Romania (+28.8%), the Czech Republic (+28.1%), Spain (+17.3%), the Netherlands (+14.2%) and France (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+15 p.p.), the Czech Republic (+7.6 p.p.), Romania (+7.2 p.p.) and Spain (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while France and Germany saw its share reduced by -7.9% and -18.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported glass stoppers, lids and other closures in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy stood at +14.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+5.3% per year) and Germany (-0.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
