In 2022, the EU crude granite market decreased by -4.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. In value terms, crude granite exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Spain (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) represented roughly 47% of total exports in 2022. Poland (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Finland (X tons), Italy (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Sweden (X tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Portugal ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 51% of total exports.

Portugal, with a CAGR of +4.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of granite (crude) decreased by -25% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 58%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, crude granite imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of granite (crude), namely Denmark, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), committing a 7.7% share of total imports. Portugal (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +63.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported granite (crude) in the European Union, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 13% share.

In Italy, crude granite imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Poland (-0.1% per year) and Spain (-0.3% per year).

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
