Grapefruit Market Size in the EU

The EU grapefruit market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -13.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Spain ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +30.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 20%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in the European Union, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 12% share.

In the Netherlands, grapefruit imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-0.3% per year) and France (-4.2% per year).
