The average grape yield expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the grape yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of grapes in the European Union amounted to X ha, stabilizing at 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports in the EU
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of grapes decreased by -14.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, grape exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Italy was the major exporter of grapes in the European Union, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 43% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Greece (X tons), together constituting a 49% share of total exports. Germany (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest grape supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Spain ($X), together comprising 89% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +4.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of grapes, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
In value terms, grape imports contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main importers of grapes in 2022, accounting for near 25% and 22% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by France (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together constituting a 23% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest grape importing markets in the European Union were Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. Poland, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, Portugal, Sweden and Romania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +14.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -11.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
