Groundnuts Market Size in the EU

After two years of growth, the EU groundnuts market decreased by -10.3% to $X in 2022. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, groundnuts production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a mild downturn. Greece (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of groundnuts production, comprising approx. 57% of total volume. Moreover, groundnuts production in Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Croatia (X tons), threefold. Latvia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.6% share.

In Greece, groundnuts production expanded at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Croatia (+512.0% per year) and Latvia (-0.8% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of ground-nut (in-shell) in the European Union rose notably to X tons per ha, with an increase of 9% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the groundnuts yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the groundnuts harvested area in the European Union stood at X ha, surging by 2.3% on the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to groundnuts production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ground-nut (in-shell) decreased by -35% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 133%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, groundnuts exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Croatia was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 38% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total exports. The following exporters - Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - each reached a 6.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +78.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 73% of total exports.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 9.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, groundnuts imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) represented the main importer of ground-nut (in-shell) in the European Union, generating 72% of total import. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.1% share, followed by Portugal (4.7%). The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.8% share of total imports.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 8.2% against the previous year.
