In 2021, the amount of gypsum and anhydrite exported in the European Union expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 11% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, gypsum and anhydrite exports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +50.0% against 2014 indices. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons), together generating a 12% share of total exports. The following exporters - France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total exports.

Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Italy (+45.2%), the Czech Republic (+11.5%), Cyprus (+9.4%), Germany (+6.6%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +45.2% from 2012-2021. Spain (+5.2 p.p.) and Italy (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while France saw its share reduced by -2.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest gypsum and anhydrite supplier in the European Union, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 4.8% share.

In Spain, gypsum and anhydrite exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+5.4% per year) and France (-1.4% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

For the sixth consecutive year, the European Union recorded growth in supplies from abroad of gypsum and anhydrite, which increased by 29% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +115.8% against 2013 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, the largest gypsum and anhydrite importing markets in the European Union were Belgium ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Lithuania, Portugal, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Among the main importing countries, Germany, with a CAGR of +21.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
