Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +82.9% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports reached $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Spain dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.1% share, followed by Poland (6.4%), Germany (6.3%) and Belgium (5.1%). The following exporters - Austria (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports from Spain stood at +11.8%. At the same time, Poland (+12.0%), Cyprus (+9.4%) and Germany (+6.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. Belgium and Austria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Sweden (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+19 p.p.) and Poland (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Austria, Belgium and Sweden saw its share reduced by -2.4%, -3.4% and -8.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest gypsum, anhydrite and limestone supplier in the European Union, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 7.1% share.
In Spain, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+4.8% per year) and Belgium (+2.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, approx. X tons of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone were imported in the European Union; rising by 21% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, gypsum, anhydrite and limestone imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +103.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Finland (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the key importers of gypsum, anhydrite and limestone, together constituting 83% of total imports. Ireland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ireland (with a CAGR of +42.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Ireland and Finland, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Ireland, with a CAGR of +27.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
