After two years of growth, shipments abroad of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs decreased by -55.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 482% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, hand-made lace exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 183%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Germany dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2022. Hungary (X tons) took a 5.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (5.1%). Greece (X kg), Spain (X kg), France (X kg) and Belgium (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +37.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hungary (+87.8%), Greece (+82.2%), Spain (+28.8%), Italy (+18.9%) and Belgium (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +87.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, France (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Germany, Hungary, Greece and Spain increased by +57, +5.5, +4.2 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 72% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +94.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a precipitous descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 149%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+5.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs imported in the European Union dropped dramatically to X tons, shrinking by -28% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 197% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hand-made lace imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 137%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Germany (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) represented the main importer of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in the European Union, making up 53% of total import. France (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.3% share, followed by Spain (6.8%), Italy (6%) and Cyprus (5.4%).

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 62% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (-3.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
