The EU hazelnut market contracted to $X in 2021, declining by -8.1% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Italy (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of hazelnut production, comprising approx. 79% of total volume. Moreover, hazelnut production in Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (X tons), more than tenfold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume in Italy totaled +3.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+0.7% per year) and Spain (-5.2% per year).

The average hazelnut yield fell to X tons per ha in 2021, which is down by -10.1% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the yield increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the hazelnut yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of hazelnuts production in the European Union dropped modestly to X ha, leveling off at the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hazelnut production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of hazelnuts decreased by -0.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 100%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, hazelnut exports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the major exporters of hazelnuts in 2021, resulting at approx. 31% and 31% of total exports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Poland (X tons), comprising a 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons), Romania (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +44.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hazelnut supplying countries in the European Union were Spain ($X), France ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 81% of total exports.

Spain, with a CAGR of +45.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of hazelnuts increased by 53% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hazelnut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed resilient growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy represented the major importer of hazelnuts in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 68% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Germany (X tons) and Spain (X tons), together creating a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - France (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each finished at a 4.7% share of total imports.

Imports into Italy increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Austria (+53.9%) and Spain (+10.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +53.9% from 2012-2021. France and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Spain and Austria increased by +13, +2.5 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hazelnuts in the European Union, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.7% share.

In Italy, hazelnut imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+2.1% per year) and Spain (+7.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
