For the third year in a row, the EU preserved herring market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, preserved herring exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 5.2% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland represented the major exporter of herrings (prepared or preserved) in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), Germany (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Sweden (X tons), together mixing up a 51% share of total exports. Latvia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +2.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Poland stood at -3.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Denmark (-2.2% per year) and Germany (-6.1% per year).

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 9.4%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -10.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 5.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

The following importers - Denmark (X tons), Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons), Finland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Estonia (X tons), France (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) - together made up 20% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Romania (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported herrings (prepared or preserved) in the European Union, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with an 8.6% share.

In Germany, preserved herring imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-1.7% per year) and Sweden (-1.9% per year).

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
