The EU tall oil fatty acids market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced decline. In 2021, tall oil fatty acids exports in the European Union soared to X tons, growing by 16% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, tall oil fatty acids exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Finland was the major exporter of industrial tall oil fatty acids in the European Union, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 43% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (19%) and France (10%). Austria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of industrial tall oil fatty acids. At the same time, France (+20.9%), the Netherlands (+8.9%) and Austria (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +20.9% from 2012-2021. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of the Netherlands (+9.5 p.p.) and France (+8.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Finland ($X), Sweden ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 82% share of total exports. France and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main exporting countries, France, with a CAGR of +18.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild contraction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Austria ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in the EU

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of industrial tall oil fatty acids, when their volume increased by 6.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tall oil fatty acids imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the seven major importers of industrial tall oil fatty acids, namely the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain and Portugal, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest tall oil fatty acids importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +4.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Poland ($X per ton) and Portugal ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
