Inedible Fish Products Market Size in the EU

The EU inedible fish products market fell modestly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of inedible fish products, when their volume decreased by -15.9% to X tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

In value terms, inedible fish products exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) was the main exporter of inedible fish products, creating 53% of total exports. Germany (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Sweden (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 28% share of total exports. Portugal (X tons), Lithuania (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Poland increased at an average annual rate of +21.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Germany (+25.7%), Denmark (+25.3%), Portugal (+5.9%) and Lithuania (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +25.7% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Poland, Germany and Denmark increased by +34, +7.8 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +19.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of inedible fish products were imported in the European Union; jumping by 20% against 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -24.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, inedible fish products imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Denmark represented the major importer of inedible fish products in the European Union, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. Germany (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ireland (12%), Spain (7.2%) and France (6.3%).

Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of inedible fish products. At the same time, Ireland (+50.6%), France (+11.2%), Spain (+9.3%) and Germany (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Ireland (+12 p.p.), Germany (+4.9 p.p.), France (+3.2 p.p.) and Spain (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Denmark (-15.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+7.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
