After ten years of growth, shipments abroad of instruments using optical radiations decreased by -8.6% to X units in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 11%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments exports fell to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +50.8% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 20%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Germany (X units) represented the key exporter of instruments using optical radiations, constituting 50% of total exports. The Netherlands (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Belgium (7.2%), France (6.8%) and Ireland (5%). The following exporters - Italy (X units) and Spain (X units) - each finished at a 5.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ireland (+28.8%), Spain (+6.8%), the Netherlands (+6.0%), Italy (+4.9%), France (+3.5%) and Belgium (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ireland and the Netherlands increased by +4.4 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest optical radiation instruments supplier in the European Union, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany stood at +2.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+8.4% per year) and France (+3.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, waning by -2.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 10% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU

Optical radiation instruments imports declined to X units in 2022, with a decrease of -6.5% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, optical radiation instruments imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.5% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 43% of total imports. The Netherlands (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by France (8.4%), Belgium (7.7%), Italy (5.1%), Poland (5%) and Spain (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical radiation instruments imports into Germany stood at +3.1%. At the same time, Spain (+11.8%), the Netherlands (+8.4%) and Poland (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2022. Belgium, France and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 66% of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +13.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
