At the same time, Romania (+28.4%), Austria (+11.1%), the Netherlands (+8.2%), France (+5.5%) and the Czech Republic (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Romania, the Netherlands, Austria and France increased by +10, +2.5, +2.3 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Romania ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 49% share of total imports.
Romania, with a CAGR of +23.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
