Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +58.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, ketone and quinone exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +63.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Belgium was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 51% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Germany (X tons) and France (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total exports. The following exporters - Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.
Belgium was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ketones and quinones exports, with a CAGR of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Italy (+2.0%), the Netherlands (+1.4%) and France (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Poland (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Belgium (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Germany saw its share reduced by -3.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Italy and Poland, which together accounted for a further 16%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +2.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2021, supplies from abroad of ketones and quinones increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, ketone and quinone imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +53.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of ketones and quinones, namely Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Italy (X tons) held a 6.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Spain (4.7%) and France (4.6%). The Czech Republic (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +5.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 61% share of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +5.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, surging by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
