Kola Nut Market Size in the EU

In 2022, the EU kola nut market decreased by -4.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +35.7% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In value terms, kola nut production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 100%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The Netherlands (X tons) remains the largest kola nut producing country in the European Union, accounting for 99% of total volume.

For the third year in a row, the European Union recorded growth in shipments abroad of kola nuts, which increased by 48% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 546%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, kola nut exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 366% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 50% of total exports. France (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (11%) and the Netherlands (9.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +49.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +39.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 78%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU

In 2022, overseas purchases of kola nuts decreased by -2.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, kola nut imports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

France represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 63% of total imports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Italy (8.2%) and Spain (6.6%). Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into France increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+44.2%), Italy (+33.7%) and Spain (+16.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +44.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-3.1%), Belgium (-6.2%) and the Netherlands (-7.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Italy (+7.6 p.p.), Spain (+4.7 p.p.), France (+4.2 p.p.) and Poland (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-2.8 p.p.), Belgium (-3.8 p.p.) and Germany (-10.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported kola nuts in the European Union, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.7% share.

In France, kola nut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.8% per year) and Italy (+35.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 42%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+6.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
