In value terms, lactose exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 47% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lithuania (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each recorded a 4.1% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +45.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 85% of total exports. Italy, Poland, Austria and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +43.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Lactose imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, picking up by 23% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports surged to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Ireland (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons), Austria (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the major importers of lactose and lactose syrup, together generating 84% of total imports.
