Lard Market Size in the EU

The EU lard market totaled $X in 2022, increasing by 1.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The shipments of the four major exporters of lard, namely Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain, represented more than two-thirds of total export. From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Italy, with a CAGR of +13.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 21% against the previous year. Export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lard export price increased by +91.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of lard were imported in the European Union; waning by -7.3% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lard imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 59%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Spain (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons) represented roughly 47% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by France (11%), Belgium (6.4%), Italy (6%) and Germany (5.8%).

The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lard import price increased by +107.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 42%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
