France (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of lentil production, accounting for 48% of total volume. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the lentil yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lentils production in the European Union reached X ha, surging by 2.4% against the year before. In general, the harvested area saw a strong increase. In 2022, exports of lentils in the European Union reduced notably to X tons, with a decrease of -22.6% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 64%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lentil exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the largest exporters of lentils, together mixing up 82% of total exports.

Exports from the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +13.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+35.4%), Italy (+11.3%), the Czech Republic (+7.6%), Spain (+6.8%), Germany (+6.3%) and France (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +35.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belgium (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands, Poland and Italy increased by +11, +4.7 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest lentil supplying countries in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 49% of total exports. France, the Czech Republic, Spain, Belgium and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +31.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of lentils imported in the European Union contracted to X tons, which is down by -4.5% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 36%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lentil imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The Netherlands (X tons) took a 7.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Greece (4.8%). The Czech Republic (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +16.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lentil importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. Spain, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Greece, Belgium, Poland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Hungary and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 43%.

Among the main importing countries, Portugal, with a CAGR of +20.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
