The average lettuce and chicory yield contracted slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, exports of lettuce and chicory in the European Union declined to X tons, waning by -7.1% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 6.5%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Spain (X tons) represented the major exporter of lettuce and chicory, achieving 61% of total exports. The Netherlands (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Italy (9.2%). Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Spain increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+13.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Spain (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Spain ($X) remains the largest lettuce and chicory supplier in the European Union, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Spain amounted to +1.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+2.5% per year) and Italy (+0.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 12%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU
Lettuce and chicory imports totaled X tons in 2022, increasing by 2.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 8% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Italy (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the key importers of lettuce and chicory, together constituting 69% of total imports. The following importers - Belgium (X tons), Sweden (X tons), Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons), Finland (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 21% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lettuce and chicory in the European Union, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Germany was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+1.2% per year) and Italy (+4.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 7.9%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
