In 2022, the EU market for lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines increased by 73% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption posted a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Production of Lifts, Elevators, Moving Stairways and Draglines in the EU
In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 12%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in the EU
In 2022, shipments abroad of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines decreased by -12.2% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -21.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 13%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the seven major exporters of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines, namely Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, France and Sweden, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Belgium (X units) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +28.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lift, elevator, stairway and dragline supplying countries in the European Union were Italy ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 49% of total exports. The Netherlands, Slovakia, France, Sweden and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
Slovakia, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per unit) and Slovakia ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) and France ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Lifts, Elevators, Moving Stairways and Draglines
Imports in the EU
In 2022, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines, when their volume decreased by -9.5% to X units. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, lift, elevator, stairway and dragline imports rose notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of lifts, elevators, moving stairways and draglines, namely the Netherlands, Germany and France, represented more than third of total import. Poland (X units) held a 6.9% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sweden (6.7%), Italy (6.5%), Spain (5.6%) and Austria (5.1%). Belgium (X units), Finland (X units), Portugal (X units), the Czech Republic (X units) and Romania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +13.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest lift, elevator, stairway and dragline importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Germany ($X), together accounting for 41% of total imports. Italy, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +10.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while Finland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (-1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
