The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +60.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports in the EU
Lithium battery exports expanded significantly to X tons in 2021, increasing by 14% compared with 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lithium battery exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the five major exporters of lithium cells ans batteries, namely Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium and France, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Spain (X tons), achieving a 4.9% share of total exports. Italy (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +29.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 57% of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Poland, Italy and Spain, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +27.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 14%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Lithium Battery Imports
Imports in the EU
Lithium battery imports expanded notably to X tons in 2021, growing by 8.2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 33%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, lithium battery imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the six major importers of lithium cells ans batteries, namely Germany, the Netherlands, France, Poland, Belgium and Italy, represented more than half of total import. The Czech Republic (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X tons) and Austria (X tons). All these countries together held near 14% share of total imports. The following importers - Sweden (X tons), Romania (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Ireland (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 43% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Belgium, France, the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Ireland, Spain, Denmark and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 49%.
Among the main importing countries, Romania, with a CAGR of +33.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
