The EU luggage market expanded rapidly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, luggage exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the eight major exporters of luggage and handbags, namely Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Greece, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Greece (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 84% of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Spain, Belgium, Poland and Greece, which together accounted for a further 12%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the European Union stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Export price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage export price increased by +71.4% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of luggage and handbags decreased by -1.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, luggage imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Greece (X tons), Hungary (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) represented roughly 91% of total imports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest luggage importing markets in the European Union were France ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +13.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage import price increased by +53.7% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
