The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 14%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Cellulose pulp machinery exports dropped markedly to X units in 2022, declining by -49.1% on the year before. Overall, exports faced a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 122%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cellulose pulp machinery exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Sweden (X units) was the largest exporter of machinery for making pulp of fibrous cellulosic material, generating 50% of total exports. Finland (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (9%), Poland (6.7%) and Austria (6.4%). The following exporters - Germany (X units) and France (X units) - together made up 6.9% of total exports.
Exports from Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -3.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Italy (+13.0%), Poland (+10.4%) and France (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Austria (-18.3%), Finland (-19.3%) and Germany (-21.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden, Italy, Poland and France increased by +27, +8.1, +5.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest cellulose pulp machinery supplier in the European Union, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.9% share.
In Sweden, cellulose pulp machinery exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-14.7% per year) and Germany (-14.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 26% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 37%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in the EU
In 2022, supplies from abroad of machinery for making pulp of fibrous cellulosic material increased by 7.8% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +68.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 35%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cellulose pulp machinery imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 60%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Finland represented the largest importer of machinery for making pulp of fibrous cellulosic material in the European Union, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 39% of total imports in 2022. Sweden (X units) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Estonia (10%), Austria (8.8%) and Poland (7.7%). Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Italy (X units), Belgium (X units), Denmark (X units) and France (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Finland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for making pulp of fibrous cellulosic material imports, with a CAGR of +27.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Denmark (+18.6%), the Netherlands (+15.3%), Poland (+14.4%), Austria (+7.8%) and Belgium (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Estonia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-1.6%), Sweden (-2.6%), Germany (-9.7%) and France (-15.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Finland (+34 p.p.), Poland (+4.9 p.p.), Austria (+2.9 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Italy, Estonia, France, Sweden and Germany saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -3.7%, -11%, -11.4% and -11.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Finland ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for making pulp of fibrous cellulosic material in the European Union, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Estonia, with an 11% share.
In Finland, cellulose pulp machinery imports increased at an average annual rate of +32.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (+2.4% per year) and Estonia (+20.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 43%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while Denmark ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+20.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
