In 2021, the EU paper making machinery market decreased by -10.3% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, consumption saw a perceptible decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper making machinery production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, Italy (X units) was the major exporter of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, making up 58% of total exports. Germany (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units) and Spain (X units). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports. France (X units), Hungary (X units), Belgium (X units) and Slovenia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper making machinery exports from Italy stood at +1.7%. At the same time, Hungary (+44.0%), Belgium (+12.3%), Slovenia (+9.4%) and Germany (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +44.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-1.7%), the Netherlands (-4.9%) and Spain (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Italy (+8 p.p.), Germany (+2.3 p.p.) and Hungary (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Netherlands and Spain saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest paper making machinery supplier in the European Union, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy stood at +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+1.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+5.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, growing by 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while Belgium ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+10.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Paper Making Machinery Imports
Imports in the EU
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard, when their volume increased by 1.6% to X units. In general, imports continue to indicate slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper making machinery imports rose notably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Germany (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units), France (X units) and Italy (X units) represented roughly 63% of total imports in 2021. The Netherlands (X units) took a 7.2% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Romania (5.2%). The Czech Republic (X units), Portugal (X units), Hungary (X units), Lithuania (X units), Belgium (X units) and Greece (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Portugal, Belgium and Greece, which together accounted for a further 51%.
Among the main importing countries, Hungary, with a CAGR of +34.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 20%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per unit), while Romania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
