In value terms, public works machinery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 70% of total exports in 2021. Italy (X units) took a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (5.6%). The following exporters - Belgium (X units), Denmark (X units) and Poland (X units) - together made up 7.8% of total exports.
Exports from Germany increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Poland (+16.4%), the Netherlands (+7.0%), Belgium (+6.5%) and Denmark (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +16.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Italy (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+6.5 p.p.) and the Netherlands (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Italy saw its share reduced by -5.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the largest public works machinery supplier in the European Union, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Germany stood at +3.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (-3.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+7.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Italy ($X per unit) and Germany ($X per unit), while Poland ($X per unit) and Denmark ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of machinery for public works and building imported in the European Union skyrocketed to X units, growing by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, public works machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
France represented the key importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Italy (X units), Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Sweden (X units), together generating a 33% share of total imports. The following importers - Ireland (X units), Belgium (X units), the Czech Republic (X units), Bulgaria (X units), Romania (X units), Slovakia (X units), Croatia (X units) and Poland (X units) - together made up 22% of total imports.
Imports into France increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ireland (+42.3%), Slovakia (+30.6%), Italy (+25.9%), Croatia (+19.0%), the Czech Republic (+15.3%), Bulgaria (+12.4%), the Netherlands (+11.2%), Romania (+9.2%), Sweden (+5.5%) and Germany (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ireland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +42.3% from 2012-2021. Poland and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Italy, Ireland and the Czech Republic increased by +10, +3.9 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, France ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for public works and building in the European Union, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in France totaled +3.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Italy (+20.0% per year) and Germany (-0.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the European Union stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
