In 2021, imports of mackerel (prepared or preserved) in the European Union contracted modestly to X tons, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, the largest preserved mackerel importing markets in the European Union were Italy ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports. Spain, Sweden, Belgium, Romania, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +21.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
